DEWA celebrates Earth Day

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, DEWA, celebrates Earth Day every year and this year, the event is organised by the Earth Day Network under the theme “End Plastic Pollution,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA.

“Earth Day raises awareness on conservation among all members of society. This will preserve the planet and protect our environment from damage that is directly or indirectly associated with irrational human activities.

“Every year, millions of people from over 180 countries around the world renew their commitment to preserving the planet. Earth Day is an opportunity to highlight these challenges, share solutions and ways to address and improve the health of the planet and contribute to preserving our natural resources for future generations. On this occasion, we conduct special environmental activities to draw attention towards environmental issues and raise awareness about possible solutions to ensuring the health of planet Earth.

“DEWA strives to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and to promote sustainability in its environmental, social, and economic levels. This supports the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, who laid the foundation for building a sustainable future for us and for our future generations.

“Dubai has become a role model for clean and renewable energy, sustainability, green economy, the reduction of carbon emissions, and finding sustainable solutions to combat climate change and global warming. The Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, is one of the key strategies that contribute to achieving this approach. It aims to provide 7 percent of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy sources by 2020, 25 percent by 2030, and 75 percent by 2050, and make Dubai the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world by 2050.

“DEWA’s efforts also support the UAE Centennial 2071, which is a long-term government work roadmap, marking the centennial of the establishment of the Union. This also supports the UAE Vision 2021, which aims to create a sustainable environment in terms of air quality, pollution, conservation of water resources, increased reliance on clean energy, green development, as well as the Dubai Plan 2021, to make Dubai a city that is fully sustainable with its resources and supported by environmental elements that are clean, healthy and sustainable. This contributes to achieving our vision of becoming a sustainable innovative world-class utility,” Al Tayer said in conclusion.
