The UAE-based “Sandstorm” launched the first domestic SUV under the name of “Al Reem” last night, adding that the vehicle will be launched in the local and Arab markets in September.
The company’s executive director, Dr. Magda Al-Azzazi, said in a press statement that the car was manufactured using modern and cutting edge technology, through partnerships with several European countries and East Asian countries, as well as parts of the local market in the UAE.
Al-Azzazi added that the company aims to start manufacturing 30% of the car from raw materials in the local market.
The company aims to build a solid industrial base for cars in the UAE.
Al-Azzazi explained that the car will be powered by 2020, just in time for Dubai Expo 2020, and it will be dedicated to the Government of Dubai on this occasion.
The main plant will be located in the Rahil area of Abu Dhabi, the Middle East’s first car city on an area of 15,000 square meters. The land has been delivered and the infrastructure is being built and will be officially opened by the second quarter of the year.
A temporary assembly line would be built in July, with the first market-oriented production scheduled for September.
She also added that 1000 cars will be produced in the first year of the opening of the factory, with production capacity to increase to 6000 cars annually, then according to the requests received by the company. Pointing out that the availability of spare parts of the new car will be easily found in the markets of the country.
Al-Azzazi explained that the car will be manufactured in three categories, including the first and second class and the “Standard”. The price of the car will start from 138,000 dirhams to 185,000 dirhams in the country’s markets. The price in the Arab countries will be different. Depending on competition in terms of prices for other cars in those countries.
The plant will be the first Arab factory to manufacture various types of SUVs, and the UAE will be the first country in the region to manufacture the first Arab four-wheel drive.
Al-Azzazi said that Sandstorm’s plant is the first of its kind to be built in the region, which will attract foreign manufacturers in the UAE’s automotive industry, helping to develop the industry locally.
