DED shuts down 4879 accounts selling counterfeit goods on social media

Dr. Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of the Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy, stated that the department has received many complaints of fake and counterfeit goods being sold online on social media applications since the beginning of this year.

Al Nuaimi added that consumer protection continues along with the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority to close the accounts of these sites or issue a list of the necessity of licensing these sites in the country in order to provide a safe consumer environment for e-shopping, as well as raising awareness campaigns for consumers on how to deal with online shopping.

He also pointed out that the issue of counterfeit goods is one of the phenomena and economic challenges in the world, and seizing these products is becoming more difficult with as a result of the continued development of counterfeiting and fraud techniques, indicating that online commerce contributes to the escalation of this phenomenon. Consumers are advised to contact the Consumer Rights Call Center on the toll free number 600522225, which runs daily from 8 am to 10 pm Saturday to Thursday.
