Due to the efforts of the medical staff at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, one of the facilities of the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), and under the supervision of Dr. David Rawat, Consultant Gastroenterologist, a 2-year-old girl was rescued after she swallowed a burning poisonous substance when she was playing around air conditioning maintenance staff at home, which caused severe burns of the second and third degrees in several places of her respiratory and digestive system.
“The girl was received in the emergency department and was in a serious condition,” said Dr. Mohammad Mokdadi, head of the department. “The pain was caused by the chemical that was classified as highly toxic”.
“After the stability of her condition was assured, she was transferred to the operating room for a thorough examination of the pharynx and esophagus to determine the extent of the damage, and thankfully, the child did not need to be transferred to intensive care, although there were several burns. It was also difficult for her to eat, so IV fluid was given to her, and treatments were prescribed to reduce the stomach’s acidity and relieve her of the burning pain. The girl was dismissed from the hospital 10 days later.
