Tsunami kills 62 people, injures hundreds in Indonesia

A tsunami killed at least 62 people on the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra and injured hundreds following an underwater landslide caused by a volcanic eruption on Saturday, the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management, BNPB, reported.

BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement, on Sunday, that the number of missing had risen to 20, while 584 people were injured. The number of casualties was expected to increase as authorities were still collecting data from areas affected by the tsunami, he added.

The volcano is located on the strait between the island of Java and Sumatra. The climatology agency said the eruption took place at 21:03 (14:03 GMT), and the tsunami hit at 21:07.
