Dubai Criminal Court yesterday sentenced an Asian gang of seven members to 5 years in prison followed by deportation and a penalty of AED 5,000 each after being charged of granting and receiving a bribe and stealing laptops.
In details, the fourth defendant who works as a security guard in one of the UAE ports mediated to grant a bribe amounting to AED 2,000 to the third defendant for allowing the rest of the gang members to enter and steal a container loaded with 4,177 computer devices worth AED 4.5 million without checking the necessary documents taking advantage of the powers granted to him.
The victim a 44-years-old Asian stated that he agreed with one of the companies operating in the port to rent the container and load it with computers for shipment to an Asian country, he followed the shipment process until it was stopped for the weekend where work should resume the following week.
The witness received a call from the shipping company manager at the beginning of the week informing about the container and computers theft, expecting that it had been committed during the weekend. He reported the incident to the police who started to investigate the crime.
A police sergeant stated that he had received a report about the theft, but and the surveillance footage of the next warehouse did not reveal any evidence against the defendants. A police officer then informed the plaintiff that they have arrested the first defendant who confessed to the crime details.
The first defendant stated that he had received a call from the fifth defendant informing him about the theft plan, whereas the fifth defendant would receive half of the total amount of the computers after selling and the first defendant should provide AED 50,000 for crime the theft preparation and the security guard bribe.
The first defendant agreed and informed the second defendant who provided the stated amount and then started planning and implementing the crime.
