A statement from TRA regarding the “Totok” application

TRA continuously follows up the recent allegations and concerns raised about the privacy of voice and video communication via the approved applications in the country and especially the “Totok” application.

The authority affirms that the legal and regulatory framework in the UAE is strictly prohibiting espionage in any of its forms and such acts are punishable by applicable laws. The authority also enforces strict standards to protect users’ privacy.
 
Accordingly, the video and audio video communication applications approved in the country are subject to these standards and are monitored on an ongoing basis.

The UAE is committed to encouraging the appropriate investment environment, support entrepreneurship and innovation in various fields. The country seeks to adopt and support the latest current technologies such as the fifth generation of mobile phones, “blockchain”, “Internet of Things” and applications of artificial intelligence.
