Kuwait approves replacing term ‘maid’ with ‘domestic worker’

The National Assembly Parliament approved the draft law replacing the term “maid” with “domestic worker” to ensure the consistency of all Kuwaiti laws with international laws, especially those related to human rights.

According to the explanatory note, the adjustment was made to circumvent reservations expressed by international human rights groups and labor-related authorities over the use of the term “maid” in legislation regulating domestic labor or other regulations.

The vote resulted in the approval of 32 MPs and the rejection of one member out of the total of 33 present.
