Germany keep World Cup challenge alive after savaging draw against Spain

Germany’s World Cup challenge was ignited by substitute Niclas Fullkrug with a blistering late equaliser to earn a crucial point against Spain.

After Alvaro Morata entered the game off the bench and converted a Jordi Alba cross in the 62nd minute, Spain appeared to be headed for a second straight victory and a significant stride toward the round of 16. But Fullkrug slammed an unstoppable shot past Unai Simon to give Hansi Flick’s squad a vitally needed point.

Spain had the better of the early scoring opportunities, with Dani Olmo hitting the crossbar thanks to a crucial touch from Manuel Neuer and Alba sending a long-range shot rippling against the side of the net.
Six minutes before halftime, Antonio Rudiger thought he had scored, but an offside flag prevented the Germany centre back from celebrating.

When Morata sprinted in front of Nilkas Skula at the front post to provide Alba’s swirling cross a decisive touch, Spain scored. As Spain tried to end the match, Marco Asensio missed a shot. Germany then retaliated, with Fullkrug defeating the Spain goalkeeper with a powerful drive after Jamal Musiala forced Simon into a stunning one-handed save.

The draw helps Germany keep their 2022 FIFA World Cup hopes in wait for the last Group E clash against Costa Rica.
