Magnitude 6.1 quake hits northern Japan

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake jolted northern Japan on Tuesday, the national weather agency said.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake hit at a depth of 20 kilometres off the coast of Aomori, but no tsunami warning was issued.

Major Japanese media outlets carried no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
