More than a million people in the UK are named after a Disney character

More than a million people in the UK are named after a Disney character.

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the news recently, you might have seen that the most popular baby names for 2019 were revealed.

And while the favourites were monikers such as Olivia and Oliver, it seems that there’s still a big preference for baby names inspired by Disney movies.

A study by travel company Florida4Less, has found that more than a million (1.05 million) people in the UK are named after Disney characters.

The research revealed that names taken from animated classics such as Toy Story, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Beauty and the Beast have rocketed in popularity since the turn of the last decade.

Those most keen to name their child after a Disney character were 18 to 34-year-olds, with three in 10 being pro-Disney.

On the other hand, 16 percent of UK adults said they thought it was a “nice idea” to name a baby after a Disney character, but they were unlikely to actually do it themselves.

The most popular Disney name overall is Jasmine, inspired by Aladdin’s Princess Jasmine followed by Toy Story favourite Rex and Beauty and the Beast’s Belle.

This baby name trend doesn’t look to be letting up any time soon, with 14 percent of people saying they’d consider naming their child Ariel (The Little Mermaid) and just under one in 10 saying they’d be tempted to go for Nala following the release of The Lion King live action movie.

Here’s a look at the top 10 most popular Disney-inspired names:

  1. Jasmine (Aladdin, 1992)
  2. Rex (Toy Story, 1995)
  3. Belle (Beauty and the Beast, 1991)
