Abu Dhabi: Female activist on trial for violating privacy

A European woman, who has been organizing environmental campaigns to help clean beaches for more than seven years, took a photograph of an Abu Dhabi beach and uploaded it online, on a website that belongs to a residential complex where she invited her friends to volunteer and clean the beach. However, a man saw his wife walking on the beach  in the background of the photo and complained that the photo was uploaded online without their permission. He then filed an official complaint with the Public Prosecution, accusing the woman  of violating his wife’s privacy. The woman was therefore sentenced to a fine of AED 150,000.

The defendant’s lawyer, Hassan Al Riyami, explained that his client is an environmental activist who holds a doctorate in aeronautical engineering, and that she was promoting environmental awareness and inviting people to volunteers and remove waste and environmentally damaging materials from beaches such as plastic materials, water bottles and cans.

He pointed out that his defendant was awarded by government agencies and associations, noting that the complainant was wearing her hijab in the picture.
