The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has suspended and withdrawn 6 drugs used as antibiotics and as cures for gout and skin infections in the UAE. This came after the Saudi Food and Drug Authority suspended these drugs due to a number of manufacturing violations that were observed during an Inspection visit by the Authority to the manufacturer.
For its part, the Department of Health has taken immediate action in the health care sector in Abu Dhabi and called for the withdrawal of all products included in the list and requested all pharmacies to stop distributing them immediately.
The list of the six drugs included the following brand names:
-Loric 300 mg tablets, used to treat gout and kidney stones and reduce levels of uric acid in the body
-Cefovex 500 mg, used as an antibiotic belonging to the second generation of cephalosporin and has an antibacterial effect
-Cefim, which is a suspension drink used as an antibiotic to treat a wide range of bacterial infections such as middle ear infections, skin, and urinary tract
-Advaquin, with the scientific name “levofloxacin”, used as an antibacterial and for respiratory diseases, skin infections and soft tissues
-Omizyn or “omezyn” capsules 20 mg with the scientific name “Omiprazol” used to treat the digestive system such as gastric ulcers and esophageal infections
-Clareva, an antibiotic that is used against a wide range of bacteria and used in the treatment of otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis and some other types of bronchitis
