DPA: Death toll rises to 26 in Indonesian floods

The death toll from landslides and floods that hit Indonesia’s South Sulawesi province has risen to 26, while 24 were listed as missing, reported the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, DPA, on Thursday.

The agency quoted the Head of the Provincial Civil Protection Agency, Syamsibar, as saying that the floods have inundated 10 districts in the province, including the provincial capital Makassar, following days of heavy rain.

All the 26 people killed lived in three districts, including hardest-hit Gowa, and more than 3,300 people were displaced, said Syamsibar, who goes by one name. “We hope waters will recede soon as rain is subsiding,” he said.

Landslides and floods are common in Indonesia during the rainy season.
