Dubai: GCC man steals Dh306,000 from dead man’s account

Dubai Criminal Court sentenced a GCC bank teller to 6 months in jail and fined him 306,000 dirhams, which is the same amount he embezzled when he forged 25 documents to steal from the account of an Emirati citizen who lost his life while undergoing treatment abroad.

According to Dubai Public Prosecution’s investigation, the 35-year-old accused falsified 25 documents during the period from May 2017 to January 2018 and withdrew varying amounts of money between 3,000 and 30,000 dirhams. The prosecution charged him with forgery and theft by fraudulent methods, the charges he denied before the Criminal Court.

The investigation revealed that an incident took place in January last year when the defendant released a request for payment to a client who he claimed to be in the bank.

The head of the teller’s department said the defendant told him that the client was in the bank’s main office, which surprised him because he used to do the transactions of this client, surveillance cameras were reviewed, and it was confirmed that there was no customer as the defendant claimed.

He added that the incident led the bank’s management to suspect the employee’s transactions. The bank conducted an internal investigation on the same day when confronted, the defendant admitted his crimes and expressed remorse.

The criminal court sentenced the defendant to six months in prison and a fine of 306,000 dirhams.
